Shri A. K. Basu joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1965 (West Bengal Cadre). He has held several important
positions in the Government of West Bengal, including Commissioner of Calcutta Municipal Corporation, Education Secretary, Labour Secretary and Principal Secretary – Food & Civil Supply. He was the Chief Electoral Officer of the State from 1983 –

Mr. Basu has worked in various capacities in the Government of India.
He was Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs during 1966 – 1967. He worked as a Special Assistant to the Union
Minister of Education, Social Welfare & Culture, during 1977 – 1980. He was Special Secretary, Ministry of Home
Affairs, Government of India from 1996 – 1997. A former Secretary in the Ministry of Power Mr. Basu was also the
Chairman of Central Electricity Regularoty Commission.

Mr. Basu has had a long association with industry and infrastructure sectors. He was Development Commissioner (Iron
& Steel) and then Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India, during 1988 – 1993. He served as Additional
Secretary & Advisor (Industry & Minerals), Union Planning Commission during 1995 – 1996, dealing with plans and
projects of nearly 200 economic and infrastructure utilities of the Government of India. He was Secretary, Ministry of
Steel and Mines, Government of India, from August 1997 – May 2000, during which he piloted the biggest ever
financial-cum-business restoration of any Indian CPSU – the INR 10,000 crore revival package of SAIL.
