Dr. V. Krishnamurthy, Chartered Engineer, Ph. D. in Economics, D. Sc. and D. Litt. is a noted personality with an illustrious career honoured with various
prestigious national and international awards has penned his memoirs titled “AT THE HELM” which has been released by Harper Collins in June 2014.
Presently he is a Member in the Board of Trustees and Member, Executive Committee, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Governing Council, Rajiv Gandhi
Institute of Contemporary Studies. Currently he is also working as the Chairman
of National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People of the
Indian industry. He is also at present the Chancellor of the Central University of
Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, Chancellor of Indian Maritime University,
Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Member of Board of Governors, Administrative Staff
College of India, Hyderabad and President of the Academy of Higher Education
(National College), Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu.
Dr. V. Krishnamurthy was the Chairman & CEO of SAIL, Maruti Udyog Limited
and BHEL. He has also served as the Chairman of National Manufacturing
Competitiveness Council (NMCC), holding the rank of a Cabinet Minister in the
Government of India. He was also the Member of National Advisory Council,
Energy Advisory Committee, Public Enterprises Selection Board, Restructuring
Committee and Member of Planning Commission. He was the Secretary to the
Government of India in the Ministry of Industry and the Chairman of Technology
Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council - an apex body reporting to the
Prime Minister of India. He was also the Chairman of the National Committee
on Quality and a Committee constituted by the Government of India to prepare
a comprehensive White Paper on the Public Enterprises in India as well as the
Chairman of Committee appointed by the Ministry of Finance, to determine the
Policies on Disinvestment in Public Sector. He was the Chairman of “Synergy
on Energy” a group constituted by the Government to restructure oil companies
in Public Sector and Chairman of the Committee constituted by the Ministry of
Defence to assess the capability and infrastructure of Indian shipyards in private
sector to build conventional submarines. He has also represented Government of
India in various International forums and bilateral negotiations.
Between 2004 and 2014 he has also served as a Member of the Prime Minister’s
Council on Trade and Industry, Member of Prime Minister’s Trade & Economic
Relations Committee, Member of Prime Minister’s Energy Coordination
Committee Member of Prime Minister’s High Level Committee on Manufacturing
and Member of Advisory Group on climate change. He was also the Co-
Chairman of the Empowered committee for setting up FAB facilities in India
and the Chairman of the group set up by the Prime Minister for design and
manufacture of civilian aircraft in India.
He was awarded with “PADMA VIBHUSHAN ” by the President of India
for outstanding service to country in 2007, "PADMA BHUSHAN” in 1986
and "PADMA SHRI" in 1973. He has also received “THE GRAND CORDON OF
THE ORDER OF THE RISING SUN” by the Government of Japan in recognition
of his outstanding contributions to the promotion of bilateral economic relations
and understanding of Japan in India in 2009.
